BEL AIR centre getting clear late to burst through at Moonee Valley on 18th March 2023.
Exciting 3yo gelding BEL AIR showed his class and explosive turn of foot to win the Xtreme Freight VOBIS Gold Reef over 1600m at Moonee Valley on Saturday 18th March. This was his 6th start this preparation which included a trip to Queensland for the Magic Millions Carnival in early January.
Drawn in Barrier 3 BEL AIR was smartly away and settled behind the speed in the trailing one out one back position. Race favourite TORONTO TERRIER was positioned to his outside and several times through the run he lay in on BEL AIR who was short of room. As the pressure came on BEL AIR was jammed in a pocket and jockey Ben Melham had to exercise extreme patience waiting for a run.
Turning for home in the short Moonee Valley straight BEL AIR still had no where to go and it wasn’t until inside the final 150m that Melham was able to angle out and find clear room. BEL AIR responded instantly and drove through under a hands and heels ride to grab victory on the line.
This was clearly a win full of merit and trainer Anthony Freedman commented after the race that BEL AIR now knew how to be a race horse. "His race craft has improved and the way that he overcame all the obstacles in running today and then found the line so strongly shows that there is a lot more to look forward to”.
Options are open for this good looking son of WRITTEN TYCOON who could yet line up in the VOBIS Guineas on 15 April in what would be his 7th run of the preparation.
